In a new NCI-funded study, researchers will be merging nanotechnology and cancer surgery techniques with the aim of finding tumor cells present in pancreatic, lung and breast cancers. Nanoparticles are injected into the body, where they home in on tumor cells and bind with them. The tumors, including tumor margins and lymph nodes, which may also be involved, can be scanned by surgeons using special equipment, so that every cell can be identified and removed. Complete removal of cancer is often key to preventing recurrence.
